By George A. Wiens

EVENING IN GETHSEMENE

IT WAS EVENING IN GETHSEMENE.
AS JESUS KNELT AND PRAYED,
FOR THE TASK THAT HE WAS FACING
COULD NO LONGER BE DELAYED.

HE HAD THAT ONE LAST SUPPER
WITH THE FRIENDS HE LOVED SO DEAR,
BUT NOW THEY COULD NOT HELP HIM,
FOR HIS DEATH WAS DRAWING NEAR.

THE SOLDIERS WERE NOW COMING.
HE COULD HERE THEM COME HIS WAY.
THEY WERE LED BY ONE CALLED JUDUS
WHOM HE KNEW WOULD HIM BETRAY.

THE KISS OF DEATH WAS GIVEN.
IT WAS PLACED ON JESUS' CHEEK.
THUS THE SOLDERS KNEW FOR CERTAIN,
THEY NO LONGER HAD TO SEEK.

THE TRAIL WAS NOT LEGAL
BY ANY SET OF LAWS.
JESUS DID NOT TRY TO STOP THEM
OR EVEN ASK A PAUSE.

THEY HUNG HIMON THAT CRUEL CROSS
AND THEN SAT DOWN TO WAIT
FOR DEATH TO COME AND SWALLOW,
THAT MAN CALLED JESUS' FATE.

IN AGONY HE HUNG THERE
UPON THAT CRUEL TREE,
TO PAY THE PRICE FOREVER
FOR THE SINS OF YOU AND ME.

THEY LAID HIM IN A BORROWED TOMB.
HE WOULD NOT NEED IT LONG.
THREE DAYS WAS ALL HE NEEDED
TO SING THE VICTOR'S SONG.

HE AROSE AND NOW IS WAITING
ON HEAVEN'S GOLDEN SHORE
TO WELCOME THOSE HE DIED FOR,
YOU, AND ME, AND MORE.

YOUR TICKET HE HAS PURCHASED
WITH HIS BLOOD ON CALVARY'S TREE.
IT IS YOURS, IF YOU'LL ACCEPT IT,
AND YOUR HEART WILL BE SIN-FREE.
